60m: I found my limit

by Arlyn on May 14, 2008

I have been riding a lot lately. I’ve been averaging around 175 miles a week over the previous 6 weeks. To compare, I achieved my mileage goal last year of 3,000 miles with an average of just 58 miles a week.
Riding with the Descenders a lot has also turned up my intensity. I’ve [...]

Cycling for Sight

by Arlyn on May 13, 2008

I just came across another great charity ride in SoCal. Cycling for Sight is holding a 220-mile, 3-day ride from Santa Barbara to San Diego August 1-3.

What’s cool about Cycling for Sight is that it’s more than just a simple fundraiser. Not only will all proceeds benefit the Braille Institute’s mission to eliminate [...]

When to change a tire

by Arlyn on May 13, 2008

As near as I can tell, I’ve got 2,576 miles on my front tire. I’ve kept much better records of my back tire cause it gets changed much more frequently (usually about every 800 miles). I can tell when my back tire is ready for a change when the bead gets rubbed flat. [...]

47m: Welcome to the Descenders

by Arlyn on May 12, 2008

Rode a nice 47 mile loop today with Dave S. of the Descenders. We set a healthy pace and dealt with an ever present headwind, even though we were riding a loop. Legs hurt a bit - should have spun them out on the trainer yesterday after Saturday’s big ride.
But the big excitement [...]

103m: No time for pie

by Arlyn on May 10, 2008

At mile 91, I began to feel the shakes of a full-scale sugar bonk coming on… Wait a sec, let me start at the beginning…
This week’s Descenders ride started from Santa Ysabel and I carpooled with Mike, Dave and Rick. The plan was to ride up to Julian as a warm up, then [...]

This Saturday begins the first of cycling’s three annual Grand Tours, the Giro d’Italia or (la Corsa Rosa). 198 riders will start a 23-day epic loop around Italy that includes 4 time-trials (1 mountain, 1 team) and 4 mountain stages with 3 mountain top finishes.

Back this year is the Passo Gavia as the highest [...]

73.07m: Show me your heart light

by Arlyn on May 7, 2008

Met Mike for another North County Coastal Loop, this time we came back through Rancho Santa Fe instead of Elfin Forest. These rides are not supposed to be very high intensity, but rather base mileage rides, going for distance.
I’ve been training with a heart rate monitor since the Alpine Challenge and I’m starting to [...]

Ride the San Diego Century

by Arlyn on May 7, 2008

I’m riding the San Diego Century Bike Tour next Saturday (May 17th) with Team Climb On! We’ve already got three riders signed up for the 103-mile course and I expect a few more for either the 37-mile or 66-mile courses.

The SD Century is a fund-raising event sponsored by the City of Encinitas to raise [...]

LIVESTRONG

by Arlyn on May 6, 2008

My heart goes out to Fat Cyclist and his family, dealing with cancer in a way that I hope I never have to. And how cool was it of Lance Armstrong to send his support to help Susan win? Fatty is right that Lance’s achievements off the bike far surpass anything he accomplished in [...]

If you’ve ever dreamed of riding the beautiful French Alps then you’ve got to check out Cycling Challenge. Wills challenge this year is to ride 160,000 vertical meters. That’s over a half-million vertical feet!
His blog is full of great beta on all the best climbs in the Alps. The elevation profiles are cool [...]
