I Love a Good Bike Race

by Arlyn on February 24, 2009

Last Sunday, I was lucky enough to watch the Stage 8 of the Tour of California as they raced over Palomar Mountain, here in San Diego.

Levi, on Jens Voigt’s wheel, being LeviSTRONG.

We rode up Palomar the morning of and reveled in the spectacle that is a bike race. There was the Pope, the Antler Guy, [...]

I’ll be Racing Across the Sky

by Arlyn on February 23, 2009

I just heard from the Leadville organizers who cleared up the little mystery about whether my application was chosen and I’m IN! I’ll be racing with about 1,300 others in Leadville this August.
I’ve heard that over 10,000 riders signed up for the race and I’m proud to be one of just 13% chosen. Wow, I [...]

Hold Your Horses!

by Arlyn on February 19, 2009

I was doing my weekly budget today and saw a check had cleared for $250. I didn’t remember the expense so I clicked to view an image of the cleared check…
…and fell COMPLETELY out of my chair. It was the check I wrote to the “Leadville Trail 100” for my entry in this year’s Leadville [...]

No Leadville for Arlyn

by Arlyn on February 10, 2009

The entrants list for the 2009 Leadville Trail 100 MTB race was just released and my name is not on it. There was a record number of applicants this year due to the publicity of Lance racing it last year.
I’m bummed. I guess I’ll have to create some other adventure for this year.

Postcards From Boulevard

by Arlyn on February 8, 2009

My friend Mark drove an hour east of San Diego just so he could stand in the freezing cold, rain and snow to get these pictures of us. He is the man! Thanks Mark!

2009 Boulevard Road Race

by Arlyn on February 7, 2009

Just as I was starting to feel good it started snowing. Big, wet, sloppy snowflakes coming down hard. Ok, now I’ll start from the beginning…
It was freezing-ass cold in Live Oak Springs today for my first road race. I raced the Cat 5(a) along with several Descenders; Voris, Mike, Rick, Drew and Logan. The plan [...]

Waiting Patiently for my “Yippee!” Card

by Arlyn on February 6, 2009

Several people around the country are reporting having received their acceptance letters for the 2009 Leadville 100 MTB Race. I haven’t gotten my “Yippee!” card yet and am hoping it’s because I’m two days away in San Diego. Apparently the letters were postmarked yesterday.
Between the Boulevard race tomorrow and waiting to see if I got [...]

The Answer to a Question

by Arlyn on February 4, 2009

Ihave completed my training to race my first USCF road race. I’ve trained hard and consistently for the last 14 weeks and know that I’m stronger and faster on a bike than ever. The only thing left for me to do is some recovery, eat well and get plenty of rest.
The weather forecast is calling [...]

Yellow Bike Takes the Win!

by Arlyn on February 1, 2009

The pace was controlled up to kilometer zero where the two riders began the race. Yellow Bike took an early lead. He quickly got the gap with only a little bit of wobbling and weaving. Orange Bike followed at a safe distance.
Authors note: This is really an account of me riding five miles around Miramar [...]

Town sign champion

by Arlyn on February 1, 2009

Yesterday was my final group ride before Boulevard, my first USCF road race. The plan was a coastal pootle to Oceanside Harbor and eleven mighty Descenders showed up for the ride.

The Mighty Descenders at Oceanside Harbor.

I was under strict orders from Alpha not to push too hard – with the race less than a [...]
