Cyclocross is cool because the race course has such varied terrain – grass, pavement, sometimes mud and usually a little sand. This was not the case at yesterday’s race. The second race in the SoCalCross Prestige Series was held at a motorcross park way out east in the desert.
This is an example of what [...]

I couldn’t stop staring at the cover of Velonews. The February 2009 edition had just been tossed in front of my while I sat munching a sandwich in my kitchen. The cover depicted a wet, slimy, muddy and yet intensely focused cyclist – I was completely captivated. What crazy sport was this? Cyclocross – [...]

The shotgun went off about a half second early. The blast surprised me as I counted down the last 10 seconds to the start of this year’s Leadville Trail 100 MTB race along with 1,232 other riders. I half-expected to start moving at the sound of the gun, but with about 800 riders in [...]

Finally headed to Leadville this morning for the race on Saturday. What an amazing journey this has been so far. I guess you can consider that this journey really began eight months ago when I entered my name in the lottery, fully confident I’d be selected.

It felt like we were descending into the darkest depths of middle earth. I fully expected to pass sea-level at any moment. Chris Carmichael is registered and there is also talk that Floyd Landis will make his return to Leadville this year too.

I was doing my weekly budget today and saw a check had cleared for $250. I didn’t remember the expense so I clicked to view an image of the cleared check…
…and fell COMPLETELY out of my chair. It was the check I wrote to the “Leadville Trail 100” for my entry in this year’s Leadville [...]

My friend Mark drove an hour east of San Diego just so he could stand in the freezing cold, rain and snow to get these pictures of us. He is the man! Thanks Mark!

This is the lead group on the first lap. There are three Descenders here [...]

Just as I was starting to feel good it started snowing. Big, wet, sloppy snowflakes coming down hard. Ok, now I’ll start from the beginning…
It was freezing-ass cold in Live Oak Springs today for my first road race. I raced the Cat 5(a) along with several Descenders; Voris, Mike, Rick, Drew and Logan. The plan [...]
