Several people around the country are reporting having received their acceptance letters for the 2009 Leadville 100 MTB Race. I haven’t gotten my “Yippee!” card yet and am hoping it’s because I’m two days away in San Diego. Apparently the letters were postmarked yesterday.
Between the Boulevard race tomorrow and waiting to see if I got [...]

Ihave completed my training to race my first USCF road race. I’ve trained hard and consistently for the last 14 weeks and know that I’m stronger and faster on a bike than ever. The only thing left for me to do is some recovery, eat well and get plenty of rest.
The weather forecast is calling [...]

For the second year in a row, the Descenders won the Stagecoach Century Team Time Trial by setting a new course record of 4:59:30!
That’s Dave, Dave, Dave and Rick. There are 9 Dave’s on Team Descenders.
The Descenders are a San Diego cycling club that rides mostly in the Poway area. They’re famous not [...]

I (stupidly) invited my friends on the Descenders to sign up with me for the Boulevard Road Race next month. Of course, the squad’s four fastest riders did just that. I was hoping they’d at least sign up for the Mens 45+ race (they’re all geezers), but no. We’re going to line [...]

I want to be stronger on my bike. I want to be able to race and win on my bike. I want to lose 10 pounds before Boulevard. I want to be able to train harder and more often.
I want to live a long and healthy life. I want to remain active [...]

In 2008, I learned a little secret about life. ‘Someday’ never happens. As in, “Someday I’d like to cyclotour the Tour de France.” Or, “Someday I want to win a bike race.”
Your someday’s always stay in the future, safe and secure where they can’t bother anyone. The dirty secret is that [...]

Ok, my application is off. Entry is limited and determined by lottery. Wish me luck!
Dear Leadville Trail 100 Organizers,
I really want to race the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race this year. If accepted, I’m committing my entire training year to finishing the race in less than 12 hours. I know I’m [...]

Mark says that the guy who wins the bike race is the guy who wants it the most. He knows this because he’s won more bike races than I’ll ever attend. And he’s right of course. I just sigh and look down, because I don’t know if I want it badly enough.
I’m [...]

The truth is I’m just not fast enough.
I rode with the Descenders this morning after four days of inactivity. Being totally rested, I expected to dominate on the hills and on Dye Road. My goal was to take on as many high intensity attacks as possible to simulate the feel of a road [...]

Iwant to win a bicycle race. It gives me chills to say that out loud. Deep down, I don’t believe I’m strong enough or have enough discipline to get strong enough.
In 2009, I will win a bike race. Now that’s just crazy talk!
Everyone knows that I’m a little bit competitive. I’m always trying [...]
